Last night hanging out at The Murder House with my brother Mark Steez, he took control of the music & put on this song here. I guess I had already done my 2 time listen on this album, grabbed a few tracks & left it in the dust like we all do in this rapid pace music environment. Well eventually I get back around to good music, but Mark helped accelerate the process. It’s a short but sweet track off Kid Cudi’s album Man on the Moon: The End of Day. It seems even shorter with brother Common blessing the track with some inspired poetry at the end & a long sample to start. But sometimes, it’s just cause it feels good.
Thanks Mark Steez. Enjoy…

Wu-Tang Clan - Bring The Pain
You got the pain? You got the ruckus? Wu-Tang is where to bring it. This is the classic Method Man track “Bring The Pain.” Again, this is another video from New Year’s Eve in 2008 in Portland at The Roseland Theater. Slowly making my way through my old videos. 111 up. 70 some more to go.

Thank you thank you thank you, you’re far too kind.
That may be the hip hop quote of the year. Thank you Jay-Z. Well this is song comes to us on a new free mixtape, so Lupe can thank Jay himself. Has Lupe Fiasco been sent to save hip hop? The jury is still out on that. But he is giving you something for nothing & brings the intelligence to lyricism that is often missing today’s hip hop. Few seem to be so in tune with not only hip hop, but the state of the world. When have you ever heard anyone reference the Bilderberg Group in hip hop? (PS do your research on the Bilderberg Group, it’s pretty scary)
So I bring to you A) Lupe Fiasco - “Thank You” as my Song Of The Day. B) Jay-Z - “Thank You” - as a bonus download in case you didn’t pick up BP3. & C) Lupe Fiasco - Enemy Of The State: A Love Story a free brand new mixtape for you to enjoy.

Wu-Tang Clan - C.R.E.A.M.
The first time I saw Wu-Tang perform C.R.E.A.M. aka Cash Rules Everything Around Me, I felt like I could check off an important moment in hip hop in my life. I remember in middle school listening to Enter The Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers over & over again, memorizing every lyric like I was learning some ancient code. As I go through uploading old videos to my YouTube site, this performance stands out among the rest. The video, (like the last) was taken on New Year’s Eve 2008 in Portland Oregon at The Roseland Theater. The crowd was excited, obviously the Wu crew was giving a little extra.

Wu-Tang Clan - Incarcerated Scarfaces & Dat’s Gangsta
I took this video on New Years Eve 2008 in Portland Oregon at The Roseland Theater. The show was wild, even without The RZA. This video features the man Raekwon on the track “Incarcerated Scarfaces” & U-God doing his track “Dat’s Gangsta.” I’m trying to get back into uploading & editing all my old videos.
Enjoy,

I felt a little old school when I woke up today. Also feels like a good day to revisit the music of one of the greatest producers of all time, J Dilla (RIP). I snagged this 45 a few years ago at Mississippi Records in Portland. It’s such a great song & a great sample. Dilla knew best how to use interesting chops & different parts of the sample than your run-of-the-mill producer. The Philly born disco band, The Trammps song “Rubber Band” was used for the song “Dilla Say Go” off of J’s Donuts album. Enjoy a little old school & a little new school. DILLA!

It’s another Mellow Monday & I’ve got some great music for you. My friend Tyler Stenson recently made 30 Songs available for download all free, from his music with the band Lander to his own live sets. He has won the Portland Songwriters Association Performing Songwriter of the Year (2007 and 2008). His style lays somewhere between Ryan Adams & the Counting Crows, & I’ve always been impressed with his music. Careful, these songs will stick in your head. Feel free to download all 30 songs and get familiar with his music. I had an impossible time choosing today’s Song Of The Day, but this one is one of my favorites. His rendition of “Hallelujah” (originally be Leonard Cohen, covered famously by Jeff Buckley) is worth the download alone. Enjoy…

Writeous (Produced by DaiN) - Just Write - (my 100th Song Of The Day!)
DaiN on stage dreamin’
Introductions are necessary. Welcome a new comer to my blog, an MC out of Atlanta by the name of Writeous. This comes to me via a good friend, who needs no introduction, DaiN. DaiN is no newcomer to my Song Of The Day, check out his track “A Trip (Ride Out),” the song “Guns, Money, & Bitches” also featuring Illmaculate & Okwerdz produced by Lawz Spoken, & his Triple L Tour EP. The SOTD “Just Write” is an exclusive snippet from an album being produced by DaiN with Writeous as the MC. The beat is slammin’ with a little of Jimi’s style with DaiN’s New Orleans funk Portland soul flavor. Can’t wait to hear more.
Speaking of New Orleans funk, my boy DaiN had one last surprise for this, my 100th Song Of The Day, it’s a beat tape for you to check out called New Orleans Flavored Beats. It’s a free download exclusive for you. All the beats have been tagged with a boring convo, so do yourself a favor get the real flavor from DaiN himself because all of these beats are for sale without the convo. DaiN’s production is crisp & shows influence from both his hometown in Louisiana & his adopted hometown of Portland. Not only is he dangerous on the mic but his production is on par with the best producers taking over the beat scene out of Portland. Quit sleeping SUPPORTland, recognize talent while you’re nodding your head.

Blakroc ft. Raekwon - Stay Off The F*%$#n’ Flowers
RZA in the studio with The Black Keys & Raekwon on the mic
Walking into my man Tope’s store on Hawthorne today I didn’t think I’d be put on to some new hotness (unless it was new T&E ish), but I never count Tope out to come through on some musical goodness. He told me about a new album dropping by The Black Keys, who play some of the funkiest lo-fi hip rock I’ve ever heard. It got better when he said…it’s a hip hop album. It features all kinds of amazing artists from Mos Def, Q-Tip, Pharoahe Monch, RZA, Nicole Wray, Ludacris, & even a verse from a personal favorite of mine, Ol Dirty Bastard (RIP) & many more.
It was impossible to pick a single Song Of The Day off the album, but how could I resist a song called “Stay Off The F*%$#n’ Flowers”? Album is soulful, grimy, & a good thing for hip hop. I’ve always wanted to hear emcees paired up with The Black Keys & I love the approach they took to creating this album. Check out the amazing photo blog on their website here Blakroc.com with all the artists in the studio. Thanks again Tope!

The Roots ft. Raphael Saadiq - What They Do

A good rainy day track & been a favorite of mine for a long time. Off the 96 album Illadelph Halflife, the song “What They Do” features both Black Thought, one of the most underrated emcees & one of the best performers hip hop has to offer, alongside Raphael Saadiq.
Enjoy,

Don’t always have the newest but I always got the freshest. This is of course the song & video “Hate Aside” from the Northwest’s own Sandpeople. I couldn’t get the song out of my head so the best way to do save my own sanity is to infect yours. It comes off the Long Story Short EP (SUPPORTland!) & is definitely one of my favorite tracks from the group.
Enjoy…

We dedicate this to these people out here gettin’ bank. My boy is out there gettin’ it in. True. Janko Nilovic & Dave Sucky - In The Space (D.O.A. Death Of Autotune Sample)
DOWNLOAD - Verbz - Jay-Z - Blueprint For Blueprint 3
A special dose of samplitude for you. Sometimes I forget that not everyone reading my blog is a hip hop producer or emcee. Sometimes I forget that not everyone knows how the sample game works or anything about crate diggers. Well today I’m bringing you EVERY sample for The Blueprint 3 by Jay-Z. The sample I chose to put on display was a liberally used cut for the song “D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)” originally created by Janko Nilovic & Dave Sucky. Can’t make names like that up.
I once wrote that crate diggers listen to bad music so you don’t have to. Finding gold on a song you’d otherwise never listen to is always in the back of every diggers mind. The more obscure, the better. I’ve made the whole sample list available for download if you’d like to explore a little more into what made the sounds pumpin’ out of car windows everywhere.
Bless,

Blu & Exile - You’re Gonna Die
Nothin’ like a little Blu & Exile to get back into the Song Of The Day vibe. I woke up the other morning with this hook playing in my head. I couldn’t search out the lyrics online or remember which Blu album this came from so I asked my friend Epp Saheed the other day if he could remember. The only lyrics in my head were, “It’s gon be alright, like it’s gon be okay.” Of course that didn’t help much when looking for a song called “You’re Gonna Die.” Luckily I found it to feed my craving & now I’m bringing it to you. Enjoy…
PS…Exile, her name is Sha-day not Sade. heh
PSS…I cut the story out of the exit of the song, but the full song is available for download below…
